my roommate almost burnt the house down the other night. i woke up to the smoke alarm and myself barely conscious going and turning off the stove with the soon-to-be blaze from a black charcoal which had been rice. i turned it off then went to his room and had to shout at him to wake up for at least a minute. he was completely comatose. he has left the front door wide open, and has a DUI and still drives drunk at times. Would he e considered an alcoholic. He only hit points 1, 8, 12, 16, and 17. I am going to talk to him today. he is still asleep because he barbacks at a bar and gets shitfaced almost every night.

Help! I'm concerned about my husband whom I feel is an alcoholic; however, after a clean physical and the doctor mildly suggesting he reduce "a little" the amount he drinks, I'm having trouble helping him to see his drinking is out of control. He is truly a functioning alcoholic with no apparent physical harm done, but our kids and I see his personality difference when he's been drinking. Out of the signs of an alcoholic, he is safe from several, which again convinces him he's fine, yet he is on high blood pressure pills and anti anxiety medication, which I feel is a result of the drinking. Because I too drink, more socially, he throws my drinking up in my face when I attempt to address the drinking issue. A roofer, he stops at the bar daily and especially on half rainy days. Please suggest what I can do!

Are you here simply to accuse people of being alcoholics? He may sound as though he was drunk when he wrote that comment, but the comment alone is no grounds whatever to judge whether someone is an alcoholic.

I like Sandra: selfishness is certainly often involved.

I like Kai. (But I also promote the eating of vegetables)

Give Jade and Chase a break - they're just practicing a bit of levity. Their comments, though vacuous, are understandable in this arid environment, dontcha reckon?

Those people who want to do something about drinking: start off with a drinking diary - write down how much, when, where and with whom: identify trends and triggers and patterns and take little steps to break them. Use the drink diary to plan a projected slow reduction of your alcohol intake. try knocking off 1 drink every 2-3 days. throw away your special drinking glass. BREAK CONTACT with those people you only spend time with when drink is the focal point. DIFFICULT, but possible - it's about priorities. Sit in a different chair at home from the one you always sit in to drink. Go to a different shop to get your groceries from the one you always used to buy drink from. fill your fridge with ENJOYABLE soft drinks and treat food. Do all the things FHT says about getting help. Go and get Liver Function Tests done at your doctor's. Go for a walk every day. Get off drink using these methods. stay off completely for three months to give your battered liver and other organs a chance to recover a little, before getting another round of LFTs done to see if there's any improvement. Get naltrexone or acamprosate if your doc will prescribe. get disulfram if your LFTs are not too high.

That's It.

Thankyou for everything.

Addiction - be it alcoholism (or anything else for that matter) is something that you continue to do, even although you know it is harming you.

If you are an alcoholic get help from friends and immediately enroll in a support group and alcoholics anonymous. Do some research online and at your local community center and most importantly ask for help to stop drinking.

I took your test and am ashamed to say that I hit 15 of the 17 symptoms. What is my next step?

Eih...

that sounds a lot like me... I have trouble sleeping, recently I am experiencing some health problems, I have lost a significant amount of weight in the past couple of years, and getting drunk every now and then. Although a lot of these problems *are coincidental and do not have to do with the alcohol - eating, particularily. regarldess recently I have taken steps to more or less cut drinking out of my life (special occasions in moderation are okay), and I have been taking measure to eat more - although in my defense, I had no idea that vegetables had so little caloric value - and here I was thinking I was doing the healthy thing.

Jade and Chase..... you may just be an alcoholic. Hopefully you will find that getting drunk is unnecessary and adds no value to your life and does not help you as a person.
