Hugging Strangers

November 21, 2007 Family and Parenting | FamilyHelpTree @ 4:20 pm

My child gets very uncomfortable when she is instructed to hug strangers that she does not know. Many parents insist on these signs of affection with all relatives and even non relatives. I however believe this is wrong. It sends the wrong message to the child that unwanted physical contact is acceptable. In many cases the child is afraid or simply does not want the physical contact. Do not insist your child hug strangers. Instead a simple high five or handshake should do.
