15 Tips for Helping your Child to Share

October 24, 2007 Family and Parenting | FamilyHelpTree @ 5:07 pm

15 Tips for Helping your Child to Share

1. Give your child the option of hiding away one or two favorite toys but they cannot be played with until guests leave.

2. Encourage your child to give the toy to another child when he is done with it

3. Most children only begin to comprehend sharing between the ages of 3 and 6.

4. Discourage grabbing and encourage asking as this is the first step

5. Coaching your child to wait and watch while other children have a turn requires practice

6. Coaching is gentle and direct action is needed when a child becomes physical over sharing such as pushing or grabbing

7. Be patient as your child will learn to share eventually

8. Spend a large amount of time in situations with other children particularly where the toys do not belong to your child

9. Explain that if you do not share then other people will not share with you

10. Explain why sharing is important

11. A harsh method is to remove the toys in question. If there will be no sharing then there will be no toys

12. Reinforce behavior with time out if needed

13. Say thank you to your child for sharing and give encouragement for good sharing

14. Emphasize that the child can have a toy when the other child is done with it

15. Share with your child and set a good example.

  1. though i aint a father, its good to know that someone teaches their child to share, and not abuse others’ possessions. I wish every household adhered to this type of guidelines and molds a wonderful family.
